Having to give Matlock a 23 goal head start seemed like an unobtainable target but we were going to give it a go.
st Qtr George Reader opened up the scoring after just 27 seconds which set the tone for the first Qtr with a further 6 goals to get us on target for the win (1 x George Reader, 2 x Neil Swainson, 2 x Sam Swainson and 2 from Craig Mellors). Perfect start to the game and scores at the end of the 1st Qtr, Matlock 24 South Derby 7
nd Qtr Starts a little slower with first goal from Craig Mellors coming after 1min 35 seconds of play and further goals from George Reader x 1 perfect little shot from the post position on a man up, Neil Swainson x 2 and Craig Mellors x 2 but with a barren period at the end of the period (last 2.5min went goalless) leaving the scores at the end of the second period at Matlock 24 – South Derby 12. Still on target but looking like it was going to be a close call.
rd Qtr Started very quickly with the opening goal from Craig Mellors after just 17 seconds but things slowed down considerably this Qtr and 4 goals from Craig and conceding 1 left us with a mountain to climb in the last, the scores Matlock 25 – South Derby 16. Unfortunately for us a draw would be no good to us as Matlock would go through due to the League rules so 10 goals in the last and not concede will be the target for the last Qtr.
th Qtr After what must have been an inspirational team talk by Paul Reader the team come out fired up with the first goal coming after 48 second from Sam Swainson. A very dubious goal from Matlock caught Paul out the 2 x refs had a chat and decided to let the goal stand much to the dismay of Paul. 4 min played of the last period the scores read Matlock 26 – South Derby 22. A clearly shook up Matlock called a time out to stem the flow of goals and cling on to victory. With 1.04 left on the clock Neil Swainson levelled the score 26 – 26, can we do it? Never had any doubt with 27 seconds left on the clock Sam Swainson scored to make it 27 – 26 to South Derby. (Goals from Neil Swainson x 3, John Houghton x 1, Sam Swainson x 4 and Craig Mellors x 3)
